Child Find Services in Monroe County
From birth up to the 3rd birthday, services are provided by Early Steps. The process is parent/family driven. The therapists and early interventionists provide the services in the child's natural environment as much as possible: the home or child care center. Contact Early Steps at 786-268-2611.
From the 3rd birthday up to entering Kindergarten, the Child Find services are provided by Monroe County School System's Child Find Specialist with support from Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System, FDLRS. Any child that is suspected of having a delay in one or more of the developmental areas listed above can be referred to the Child Find Specialist from many sources: parents, friends, doctors, child care providers, agencies, etc. With parent permission, a free developmental screening is provided. If the child needs further assessment, the Child Find Specialist assists the family in making a referral for further evaluations and shares more information about possible services. The Monroe County School System provides most of the evaluations as well as the special services. Services meet the needs of the individual child and can range from part time therapy to full day classes.
